Comparative Study of Coarse Head Pose Estimation

چکیده
For many practical applications, it is sufficient to estimate coarse head to infer gaze direction. Indeed for any application in which the camera is situated unobtrusively in an overhead corner, the only possible inference is coarse pose because of the limitations of the quality and resolution of the incoming data. However, the vast majority of research in head pose estimation deals with tracking full rigid body motion (6 degrees of freedom) for a limited range of motion (typically +/-45 degrees out-of-plane) and relatively high resolution data (usually 64x64 or more.) In this paper, we review the smaller body of research on coarse pose estimation. This work involves image-based learning, estimation of a wide range of pose, and is capable of real-time performance for lowresolution imagery. We evaluate two coarse pose estimation schemes, based on (1) a probabilistic model approach and (2) a neural network approach. We compare the results of the two techniques for varying resolution, head localization accuracy and required pose accuracy. We conclude with details for the implementation specifications for resolution and localization accuracy depending on system accuracy requirements.

Machine Observation of the Direction of Human Visual Focus of Attention
People often look at objects and people with which they are likely to interact. The first step for computer systems to adapt to the user and to improve interaction and with people is to locate where they are, and especially the location of their faces on the image. The next step is to track their focus of attention. For this reason, we are interested in techniques for estimating and tracking ga...
متن کاملEvaluation of Head Pose Estimation for Studio Data
This paper introduces our head pose estimation system that localizes nose-tip of the faces and estimate head poses in studio quality pictures. After the nose-tip in the training data are manually labeled, the appearance variation caused by head pose changes is characterized by tensor model. Given images with unknown head pose and nose-tip location, the nose-tip of the face is localized in a coa...
متن کاملFrom circle to 3-sphere: Head pose estimation by instance parameterization
Three-dimensional head pose estimation from a single 2D image is a challenging task with extensive applications. Existing approaches lack the capability to deal with multiple pose-related and -unrelated factors in a uniform way. Most of them can provide only one-dimensional yaw estimation and suffer from limited representation ability for out-of-sample testing inputs. These drawbacks lead to li...
متن کاملMulti-level structured hybrid forest for joint head detection and pose estimation
In real-world applications, factors such as illumination variation, occlusion, and poor image quality, etc. make head detection and pose estimation much more challenging. In this paper, we propose a multi-level structured hybrid forest (MSHF) for joint head detection and pose estimation. Our method extends the hybrid framework of classification and regression forests by introducing multi-level ...
متن کاملAbsolute Head Pose Estimation From Overhead Wide-Angle Cameras
Most surveillance cameras have a wide-angle field of view and are situated unobtrusively in overhead positions. For this type of application, head pose estimation is very challenging because of the limitations of the quality and resolution of the incoming data. In addition, as a person moves, their pose relative to the camera changes, but the desired pose is the absolute pose with respect to th...
